Rainham Steel, Scunthorpe, impressive
new structural processing line

"We want to keep at the forefront of structural steel supply and therefore
need the very best equipment. Our new line gives us just that"

Leading UK steel stockholder Rainham Steel, who claim to be the countries foremost independent structural steel stockholder,
have invested in an impressive state-of-the-art, Kaltenbach structural steel processing line at their main distribution facility
in Scunthorpe. The imposing 55-acre Scunthorpe site is recognised as one of the UK’s most modern, safe and efficient
structural steel distribution centres. Holding 75,000 tonnes of structural steel, the site supplies throughout the UK with a fleet
of 40 vehicles.

Opened in 2002, this latest expansion phase of the flagship Scunthorpe site was completed in Dec 2008. Comprising a 100m
long central conveying system that passes material through the latest Gietart Sprint 1.6 shot blast and automated paint system,
which in turn sits between two parallel bandsawing lines, each with a large Kaltenbach KBS1301 DG, CNC mitring bandsaw.
The saw lines are interlinked to a heavy-duty KDX1215, 3-axis, 5 tools per spindle, NC drill. Material exiting the paint-drying
tunnel can be automatically transferred by cross ways onto either of the bandsawing systems and if required, onward conveyed
to the drill.

"Our new process line is the latest phase of our expansion and gives us a formidable added capability and speed of response”,
says John Green, Works Manager at the Scunthorpe site. “ We want to keep at the forefront of structural steel supply and
therefore need the very best equipment. Our new line gives us just that”.

The KBS1301 DG bandsaws represent the latest in sawing technology, enabling very accurate cutting to length of columns,
beams and hollow sections at 90° or incrementally mitred left/right up to 40°/30° respectively, via NC control. Infinitely variable
speed control with a powerful frequency controlled drive motor, together with automatic electro-hydraulic control of cutting
pressures, help ensure optimum cutting conditions for material type and section. The required cut length is automatically
selected even when cutting mitres. Sophisticated Kaltenbach DSTV+ and Winsteel software, via each machines touch-screen
console, enables user-friendly setting of all cutting requirements, with cutting instructions downloaded to each machine from
the sites production control department.

Increasingly the supply of cut-to-length structural steel requires the addition of precision drilled holes. The Kaltenbach KDX1215
drilling system is fully software integrated with the KBS saw lines and linked with the shot blast and paint process via heavy-duty
conveyors and cross ways, to enable full control of the entire process.

ISO9002 accredited, the Rainham Steel head office and additional stockholding centre is in Rainham, Essex. Their UK sales by
early 2008 were circa £120 million
